Abstract

The article analyzes the editorial position of the Buenos Aires Herald newspaper about the militarization of the so-called "subversive question" under President Maria Estela Martinez de Peron, from July 1974 until the coup of March 1976. Using tools of discourse analysis, it deals with the way the Herald described the problem to his readers, as well as resumed or discussed other speeches in the debate of the time. Throughout the period, the Buenos Aires Herald opinion varied from a position of notable reluctance to local militarism to the acceptance of the military role in politics in Argentina and the so-called "struggle against subversion". In this sense, the attitude of the Herald between 1974 and 1976 can be a parameter of how military intervention and the violent response to the armed groups -and various forms of social mobilization- were considered "acceptable", even among "moderate" sectors.
