La democracia en crisis: desafíos y perspectivas

La democracia está en crisis en el mundo y afronta su prueba más difícil desde el ascenso de los fascismos en la década del 30. El artículo analiza el modo como su declive se ha manifestado con intensidad creciente desde la primera década del siglo, con el estancamiento y regresión de nuevas democracias, la erosión de las ya establecidas, el resurgimiento de la extrema derecha y la renovada vitalidad de los regímenes autocráticos. El trabajo examina las interpretaciones de esta declinación según los principales enfoques teóricos y los datos de los estudios anuales que monitorean el estado de la democracia en el mundo. Indaga asimismo las posibles causas de la erosión democrática -las transformaciones socioeconómicas y tecnológicas, la globalización, el cambio cultural y el nuevo contexto geopolítico- y las perspectivas hacia el futuro. Este último no está determinado y dependerá de la aptitud de sociedades y gobiernos para identificar y resolver los problemas que generan la crisis. Demostrar su capacidad de mejorar la vida de los ciudadanos es el principal reto que la democracia tiene por delante.
